The life I dreamed…and the one I received

I recently came across a journal entry I had written at the end of 2025. It was one of those moments where I had dared to write, in vivid detail, the life I would love to create. There was a home I could already picture, circumstances I believed would unfold, meaningful work, joyful family gatherings and a future that felt so real I could almost reach out and touch it.

Reading it months later, I realized something extraordinary. Some of it had happened exactly as I had imagined. Some of it had happened in ways that were even better. And some of it hadn’t happened at all. I still don’t own that home. My divorce didn’t conclude in the way I had hoped. There are still dreams that remain beautifully unfinished. Yet I closed the journal with a smile, because I realized the greatest manifestation wasn’t any of those things. It was me.

For much of my life, I believed happiness lived somewhere beyond the next achievement. Once this was resolved… once that happened… once life finally looked the way I thought it should… then I would feel peaceful, happy. What I didn’t yet understand was that I was handing my emotional wellbeing over to circumstances I couldn’t fully control. The greatest awakening of my life has been discovering that peace doesn’t arrive when everything finally falls into place. Peace arrives when our relationship with life changes.

That is the heart of the work I now teach. As long as we are breathing, we are creating results. Every thought we repeatedly think, every feeling we entertain, every choice we make is moving our lives in a direction. We are either creating by default, from the conditioning we’ve inherited and rehearsed for decades, or we are creating by design, from a vision that calls us into a greater version of ourselves. Most people don’t realize they are living inside paradigms – deeply conditioned patterns of thinking that quietly shape what they expect, what they believe is possible and what they feel they deserve. Those paradigms become the invisible cause of visible results.

DreamBuilding® begins by changing that. It teaches us to dream before there is evidence, to think from possibility rather than circumstance and to consciously replace the patterns that no longer serve us. A dream isn’t escapism. It is creation. No cathedral was ever built without first existing in someone’s imagination. No meaningful life is created without first having the courage to envision it.

Does every dream arrive exactly as we write it? Not always. Sometimes we need greater clarity. Sometimes our expectation hasn’t yet caught up with our words. Sometimes we’re still learning to feel worthy of receiving what we’ve asked for. Sometimes there is simply a season of gestation. Sometimes life is quietly preparing something even better than we knew to ask for. And sometimes the greatest work isn’t bringing the dream into form at all. It’s bringing us into a new level of awareness.

Looking back now, I can see that while I was waiting for my circumstances to change, my heart was changing instead. I stopped trying to control what other people thought, chose or did. I stopped believing my peace depended upon fairness, perfect outcomes or the timing of external events. I learnt that I could stand in my truth, continue taking purposeful action, remain deeply grateful and release my attachment to how everything had to unfold. That wasn’t resignation. It was freedom.

Ironically, it was from that place that life became richer than ever before. Relationships bloomed and flourished, my work found a depth and authenticity I couldn’t have manufactured. I became happier, not because every dream had arrived, but because I no longer needed every dream to arrive before allowing myself to experience joy.

I still dream with the same boldness. I still write my visions with extreme specificity. I still believe we are called to create lives we absolutely love. But today I understand something I couldn’t have understood when I first wrote that journal entry. The dream is doing far more than creating a future. It is creating me. Every time I choose possibility over limitation, gratitude over fear, intention over reaction and love over deficiency, I become someone capable of holding a greater life.

Perhaps that is the miracle hidden inside every dream. We imagine we are asking life to change our circumstances, when all along the dream has been patiently changing us. And when that happens, whether the house arrives tomorrow or next year, whether life unfolds exactly as planned or takes a more beautiful path, we discover something wonderfully liberating. We are already enough. We are already whole. We are already living the miracle of becoming.
